FROM 1988-2004, WE EXPERIENCED SO MUCH SUCCESS TOGETHER THAT WE WERE ABLE TO EXPAND OUR BUSINESSES INDEPENDENTLY AND GIVE EACH OTHER WHAT GURU CALLED “CREATIVE SPACE”, BEFORE PLANNING TO REUNITE FOR OUR 7TH LP WHEN THE TIME WAS RIGHT. TRAGICALLY, WE WILL NEVER REACH THAT DAY.

Guru has died of cancer at the age of 43.

Guru, real name Keith Elam, passed away yesterday (April 19) after a year-long battle with the disease. The rapper, who formed Gang Starr in 1985, had suffered a heart attack on February 28 then slipped into a coma.

Shortly after his death producer Solar released a letter allegedly written by the rapper on his death bed, reports Allhiphop. In it Guru stated that he wanted Solar to look after all elements of his character after death, and that his ex-Gangstarr partner DJ Premier should not be allowed to operate under the duo's name.

"I, Guru, am writing this letter to my fans, friends and loved ones around the world," the letter began. "I have had a long battle with cancer and have succumbed to the disease. I have suffered with this illness for over a year. I have exhausted all medical options."

It continues: "Solar and his family is my family and I love them dearly and I expect my family, friends, and fans to respect that, regardless to anybody's feelings on the matter. It is my wish that counts. This being said I am survived by the love of my life, my sun KC, who I trust will be looked after by Solar and his family as their own. Any awards or tributes should be accepted, organized, approved by Solar on behalf of myself and my son until he is of age to accept on his own."

Writing of DJ Premier in the letter, Guru added: "I do not wish my ex-DJ to have anything to do with my name likeness, events tributes etc. I had nothing to do with him in life for over seven years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ."

Guru's actual family are yet to comment on his death, although last month his nephew Justin Nicholas-Elam Ruff posted a YouTube video saying that Solar was not letting them see him during his illness.

"Solar has completely cut us off. My family has no way of knowing what is going on with Guru's situation," he said in the video.

The DJing community and the greater dance music scene mourns the loss of a clubbing staple today. No, Steve Aoki hasn’t hung up his record bag, but rather news has emerged that iconic turntable manufacturers Technics will be stopping production on their universally loved Technics 1200s and Technics 1210s.

In a statement re-posted on dance board Global Hardstyle, the company behind the production of the Technics turntables Panasonic announced that they would cease the manufacture of Tehcnics turntables in February next year, citing an increasing decline in sales as the motivation behind the line’s demise.

The Australian arm of Panasonic issued a similar statement today, expressing their disappointment that the brand’s 35 years-and-running legacy was to be put to bed.

“It is a sad day today but due to low sales globally in analogue turntables a decision to stop production has been made on Technics Turntables,” Panasonic spokesman Ian North explained. “For Australia this means we will receive our last shipment in March.”

With the disappearance of Technics decks now imminent it’s becoming increasingly clear that the digital juggernaut is showing no signs of slowing down. We’ve already heard from trance icon Tiesto how he’s abandoned the ‘outdated’ medium in favour and gone for the ease and accessibility of digital tune libraries. Indeed, the new (and might we just say super-sexy) CDJ-2000s from Pioneer look to be making things easier than ever before with USB stick functionality, employed just last weekend by another digital convert Sasha.

Whilst we’re sure the classic Technics turntables will live on in the hearts of many club-reverent folk out there – not to mention in more than a few purist clubs – it’s still a crushing blow to lose the decks, and if nobody minds, we’ll be bringing beer o’clock around early this Friday afternoon.

LIQUID FLOW INC. is celebrating its success as Atlantic City’s premier open mic venue with an all star line up with the grand finale edition of THE FLOW SESSION: MUSIC & SPOKEN WORD.

This event takes place at Le Grand Fromage which is located at 25 Gordon’s Alley on Thursday November 19, 2007 from 9pm-2am. Free admission with canned good donation. Age restriction is 21 and older (ID is a must).

Inspired by the resurgence of public interest in poetry and spoken word performance, THE FLOW SESSION: MUSIC & SPOKEN WORD made its Atlantic City debut on May 8th , 2003 in the OZONE Lounge at the Flagship. Created by Shawn A. Wright (Owner/Founder of LIQUID FLOW INC.), the sessions were meant to provide an outlet for aspiring poets, singers, and lyricists to express artistic talent and thought-provoking creativity. The success of this monthly open mic series can be contributed to combining the hip-hop esthetic of DJing and turntablism with the sensibilities of traditional poetry forums of the 60’s. Roxanne Shante Admits She Never Got Ph.D, Apologizes

As one of the vanguard figures in Rap history, Roxanne Shante made her mark when she got involved in the infamous and very heated lyrical battle against Rap group UTFO. The conflict, dubbed the "Roxxane Wars," put her on the Hip Hop map. Recently, Shante has become the center of another controversy that may end up damaging her reputation.

This past August, Shante told the New York Daily News that she earned a Ph.D in Psychology from Cornell University. Not only did she claim to have received her doctorate from the university, but she also affirmed that her former record label, Warner Music, funded her education "for life". According to Shante, there was a clause in her contract that would make Warner responsible for her schooling, and they eventually paid over $217,000 for her to go to school. However, after an investigation done by Slate.com, it was discovered that many of Shante's claims were false.

At first, Shante told Slate via email, "[I] made a mistake on an application and put my old name so maybe that's the reason for [Cornell's] computer error?" However, Shante admitted yesterday that her claims regarding Warner Music and her doctorate were indeed false.

"It is very easy to criticize someone and I have left myself open to criticism," she said in an open letter. "All I can say to that is before you level any further criticism and cynicism, walk in my shoes. I am making this statement to apologize to the people that truly care about me for any angst that this situation has caused, and to thank them for their continued support...Like all of you, I am human and may have not made the correct decision all the time. And, like anyone else, I would like to think that my entire life or career is not judged by one error or mistake."

At the end of the statement, Shante emphasized that she would not comment on the situation any further.

Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine have unveiled plans to release an exclusive line of HP laptop computers.

The HP ENVY 15 Beats limited edition notebook PC is the latest in HP's ENVY line. Iovine and the good Doc (who calls the laptop "the new stereo") is apparently trying to give Steve Jobs a heart attack with its features: Mixing software from Native Instruments' Traktor LE, black high-gloss finish, and Dr. Dre's headphones thrown in as well. It retails for $2,299.

"We started this journey with the headphones to improve the transmission of sound between record makers and consumers," Iovine said at a press conference Monday. "What's out there is not representative of what you hear in the recording studio. As we went on this journey, we found that computers were in the way. Artists and producers want their sound repaired in digital audio. Computer companies charge $1,000 for computers but only spend 50 cents for speakers. With HP, we found a partner willing to take the step to improve the overall sound in the PC. This is for anyone who plays music."

Sad news on Friday October 02, 2009, John “Mr. Magic” Rivas has passed away, reportedly after a heart attack. It’s possible that his name doesn’t ring an immediate bell with you, but if you’re a fan of hip-hop in any capacity, take a minute to read up on his legacy.

Mr. Magic hosted what is generally recognized as the world’s first successful rap-only radio mix show beginning in 1982 on New York City’s WBLS-FM. Among other things, Mr. Magic’s show introduced the world to his co-host Marley Marl, who would soon be recognized as one of the genre’s most talented producers. In 1994, the Notorious B.I.G. memorably paid tribute to the show in the opening verse of his breakout single “Juicy”: “It was all a dream/I used to read Word Up magazine/Salt-n-Pepa and Heavy D up in the limousine/Hanging pictures on my wall/Every Saturday, ‘Rap Attack,’ Mr. Magic, Marley Marl.“

Born Anthony Williams, Grand Master Roc Raida had been hospitalized last week after suffering a spinal injury while practicing mixed martial arts. He underwent two successful back surgeries and was reported to be making steps towards recovery.

However, the DJ encountered health complications in the early hours of Saturday and was pronounced dead at the age of 37.

Busta Rhymes took to his Twitter page to honor Raida and vowed to keep his memory alive.

"I am sorry 2 say that on this day at 2:05 Sept 19th we lost another incredible life...Dj Roc Raida died 2day my personal Dj is gone... I just wanna thank everyone 4 ur love and support and ur prayers ...We will never let ur name die Roc...We love u and will 4ever miss u...RIP."

Roc Raida, was one of the original members of turntable crew the X-Men, who later became known as The X-Ecutioners. He rose to international stardom after landing the DMC World DJ Championship title in 1995 and went on to produce tracks for artists including Fat Joe, Ghostface Killah, Linkin Park and Pink.

Williams is survived by his wife, mother and three daughters.

Beatgrid – Utilizing the new Quantizing feature, cue points and loops can be set perfectly on-beat. The Quantize feature ensures cue points are set accurately and automatically, correcting and synching beats during manual looping or a real-time cueing, preventing off beat mistakes.

Users can then transfer analyzed music files to their preferred storage media and play them directly from the new CDJ turntables. Pro DJ Link
The new turntables feature Pioneer’s Pro DJ Link that enables up to four CDJ-2000/900s to be connected via the Link Port to share a single music source, whether it is a hard drive, USB and/or SD memory card. Once linked, users have the ability to quickly find, display and choose the music file from a connected source through the CDJ’s built-in display and control knobs. A quick turn of the knob lets users scroll through created files and folders and a push of the knob confirms the song choice.

Advanced Connectivity
The new turntables feature a 24-bit/48 kHz sound card and HID and MIDI control compatibility via USB port. Up to 35 controls on the surface of each player can be used to trigger other devices, such as DJ effecters and software by way of HID and/or MIDI.

The HID controls were implemented into the players for superior interfacing with software, faster communication speed over MIDI, audio/visual streaming and two-way information on displays. HID enables easy, precise and native control of DVS systems such as Serato™ Scratch Live, Native Instruments’ Traktor series and MixVibes Cross2 without the need for time-coded discs.

CDJ-2000 Enhancements

LCD panel and Graphic User Interface – The flagship CDJ-2000 features a large WQVGA 6.1-inch full-color 480 x 234 LCD panel for displaying song titles and jacket art as well as detailed track information so DJs can select songs at a glance. The wave data of each song is also illustrated on screen, showing high and low amplitude to further assist DJs.

Needle Search – Helps DJs instantaneously get to a specific part of a song with a simple touch of the Needle Search pad. Found directly below the CDJ-2000’s high resolution LCD panel, the touchpad lets the DJ “place the needle” and jump quickly to a specific part of a music track.

Jog Dial – Adjustments for tension were enhanced from previous models allowing the DJ to further customize the feel of the jog dial from a light to heavy sensitivity. Four illuminated areas on the sides of the Jog Dial aid the DJ in finding the desired spot on the plate in dim lighting environments.

CDJ-900 Enhancements

Slip Mode – When activated, Slip Mode silently continues song playback during a loop, reverse or scratch and continues audible playback at the exact time when the loop, reverse or scratch is ended creating smoother transitions.

Advanced Auto Beat Loop – The CDJ-900 generates a four-beat loop at a touch of a button creating a customized sound to provide more time for DJs to blend in transitioning music.

The Extras
For more accurate tempo control while mixing, each player is enhanced with increased frame increments of 0.5 frames that allow the DJ to set a cue point or loop point with more precision.

To achieve the highest sound quality, both the CDJ-2000 and CDJ-900 were equipped with the audio industry’s highly respected Wolfson DAC processors, delivering a very transparent, accurate audio signal resulting in a highly improved signal-to-noise ratio and increased headroom.
